FAQs and Comments

For those interested in knowing more about what we, Monterey Peninsula For Life, believe here are some frequently asked questions and comments we receive both from the pro-choice and pro-life perspective.

From the pro-life perspective

“What exactly does Monterey Peninsula For Life do?”
We stand in front of the local abortion clinic and offer help to women facing an unplanned pregnancy. We provide open adoption from a legally qualified family, temporary shelter for women being coerced into abortion and essential baby gear such as cribs, car seats, strollers for women who faced an unsupported pregnancy but chose life. We also raise awareness about the free and confidential services available to women from the local pregnancy centers: pregnancy tests, consultation, maternity clothing, baby supplies, referrals to longer-term maternity housing, post-abortion counseling with support groups, and more.

“Personally I’m pro life but I don’t believe it’s my job to tell others what to do.”
Would you say the same things about rape or child abuse? The right to life is the foundation of civility upon which all other rights stand. Because abortion terminates the life of an innocent and defenseless human being we have an obligation to speak and act accordingly.

“This is a political issue. I don’t get involved.”
Many issues have political outworkings such as domestic abuse, sex trafficking and child abuse. Violence against defenseless victims is first and foremost a moral issue. Hiding behind the pretense “political issue” does not absolve us from our God-given responsibility to love our neighbors.

“I don’t ‘feel called’ to be involved.”
A person is specifically called to save lives in our neighborhood the same way the Good Samaritan was called to his act of service. At the heart of this mission is loving our neighbor whose life is in peril: the Second Commandment applies to us all. Would it be impossible to set aside one hour a week to help save your neighbor?

“Honesty, I don’t have the strength or composure to do pro-life sidewalk ministry.”
Agreed. The truth is none of us have the innate ability to stand at the doorstep of tragedy and face rejection and confrontation. The good news is you don’t need to depend on your ability. Christ is there and He will strengthen you when you trust Him and “step out of the boat.”

“If I came out to the sidewalk, I wouldn’t know what to say.”
Certified counselors at the local pro-life pregnancy centers are qualified to walk women through the complex decision making process regarding their pregnancy. We, Monterey Peninsula For Life, have a simple and effective training program but still you are not expected to be a counselor. You simply pray on-site and hand out information which largely speaks for itself.

“Is it safe out there?”
It is always safer for the pre-born child. The vast majority of confrontations we face are verbal and brief. Following Christ involves a certain amount of risk but the spiritual benefits to those persecuted for doing the right thing far outweigh the uncomfortable moments.

“How effective is this pro-life ministry?”
On numerous occasions we’ve witnessed couples park at the abortion clinic, talk with each other inside their vehicle then drive away without entering the facility. Several times individuals thanked us for saving their nephew or granddaughter from abortion. God only knows how many women cancelled their appointments because of a peaceful, loving and prayerful presence in front of the clinic.
